East Tennessee has almost perfect growing conditions during the summer for most plant species. However, cooler temperatures during spring, fall, and winter (zone 6) mean that the best varieties of plants for your yard are those native to our area. We have compiled a list of our favorite landscape plants, ones we know will thrive in our climate. Read below to learn more about each plant.

Brazilian verbena

A great butterfly attracting plant, verbena blooms from July through October.
Grows 4-6 feet tall with a 12-24 inch spread.
Likes well-drained soil, sun to partial shade, and is a good border plant.

Butterfly bush Another great butterfly attractor, this is a perennial that can grow 6-12 feet tall with a spread of 4-15 feet.
Blooms throughout the summer and likes full sun, and well-drained soil.
Prune in winter and cover with mulch.
Azalea Azaleas are considered to be the Royalty of the Garden. They bloom early between April and May in our region. Most varieties of azalea grow between 3-6 feet tall. Most varieties like full shade, moist soil, and should be pruned to promote healthier growth.
Phlox paniculata - a great plant for attracting butterflies

Phlox is a plant that Butterflies, bumblebees and an occasional hummingbird find phlox irresistible. Nighttime pollinators like Hawkmoths and night moths also visit these beautiful flowers from afternoon to dusk.

This hardy plant grows best in partial shade, and is a perfect plant for the Eastern Tennesee region.  There are over 60 varieties of Phlox, from ground cover to varieties that grow up to 6 feet tall.
