Chad's tip of the month....

Do you have plants that look decaying corpses in your flower beds? You may want to chop their dead heads off! Off with their heads! But do so carefully because cutting the plant too much, say, completely down to the ground because you got clipper-happy, could very well ensure it won't grow back next year.

Specific pruning tips

The brown stem on Day Lillys will simply pull out with very little effort, but let the foilage die out first before cutting them back and putting them to bed. Do this after the first frost.

This advice can also be applied to many bulb-type plants like iris, other lillys, hosta, etc. Lirope (monkey grass) should be cut completely to the ground and you'll get a nice thick green when Spring returns.

Dont forget to fertilize your bed areas with 10-10-10 in late fall or winter. Those poor bulbs and roots need food when it gets cold in winter.

So, remember dead-head your fall color annuals and they'll bloom longer, and cover your mums and asters each night if frost is near. Cover your mum! Protect your aster!

our landscape design philosophy

An average 1500 square foot home requires approximately 40-50 beautiful plants, clean, pefectly cut beds with 3" of mulch and your yard can be transformed in just a few days for under $2000.

But that's not all! You'll reap the benifits of your investment year after year. Our staff makes frequent visits, free of charge, after the intial installation to guide and instruct you on watering and basic maintenance skills. We care about your new landscape, and we want to have long lasting relationship with you, even if its a one time job. Our advice and assistance is free.

Don't forget to ask about our do-it-your-selfer program!

Landscape designers have certain plant selections they use over and over. Because we are in zone 6, our plant selections are limited, but we just can't grow tropical palms in East Tennessee yards!

At Sycamore Gardens Landscape Services, we know which plants do well in our zone, and which do not. However, we choose the best, most well-adapted plants based on more than just geography. We choose plants that compliment each other, thus bringing harmony as well as beauty to our landscapes.

New establishment of planting beds requires shrubs, perennials, trees and mulch. All of these plants can be arranged for a harmonious balance of color, height, and depth.

what's the focal point?

Trees make a great focal point, which can then be enahanced with landscaping.

We ask questions about your interests, and if there's a focal point we can use, something that's special to you, something sentimental or even historic. Or you may want evergreen plants that will bring color all year. We offer many different combinations of plants and design, and we will work with you to create the landscape you want. The bottom line is we want what you want- for your yard to be beautiful.

We don't crowd plants together for impact. Instead, we space our plants, giving them room to spread out and thrive. And we don't place plants too close to structures like sidewalks, driveways or foundations. Plants take time to grow, to fill out properly, and we design our landscapes with the potential in mind, not just for impact the first day.

Hardscapes

Hardscapes are landscape designs using natural or pre-manufactured stone. Usually, stone is used to create retaining walls, walkways, patios or steps.

For all our hardscapes, we use pre-manufactured stones that lock together, and, depending on the size of stone, length and height is unlimited. In comparison, dry stacked retaining walls are limited to a certain height. Our stones use geo-grid technology that properly engineers your walls for drainage and durability.

Patios

To get a stone patio that looks old, as if it's always been there, we use irregular stones and fill the spaces between the stones with pea gravel, mulch, or sod. If you prefer a more finished, modern look, we use premanufactured interlocking stones. Whichever design style you prefer, we always prep the area for durability, drainage, and safety.

Steps

For steps, we use stones that are around 150 to 300lbs each and between 4-8 inches thick. These stones come in many beautiful colors and shapes, and are great accents for a wonderful pathway, steps to a pool, patio, or backyard retreat.

Drainage

Does your yard turn into a stream when it rains? We can fix that! Using corrugated pipes, improving gutter drainage, and even installing French drains, can stop water from pooling in your yard and washing out your flower beds.

Trimming

For healthy plants, they must be trimmed in mid spring and early fall. Whether you like the clean, well-manicured look or the wispy look, it's still important to trim because it promotes new growth and gets rid of dead areas.

Pruning vs. sheering

When plants become too large for the landscape, often they are pruned too heavily, something that could mean years of recovery time. We use a techniqued called "Rejuvenation" that we do in late winter or early spring. Rejuvenation cuts the plant down to the main branches we will then use as the basic shape. The trick is knowing which branches to sheer and which ones to prune. Initially, it may look unattractive, but in the spring, regrowth is healthier and the plant's shape is easier to maintain.

Mulching

Adding mulch does more than just make flower beds look good, it also aids in moisture and weed control. Too much mulch starves plants and could eventually kill them by doing its job too well. By having your yard professionally mulched once a year, you can be sure your flower beds and trees will only benefit from the mulching process.

We do deep-edge mulching using a special piece of equipment called the Trench Master™. This technique leaves a 4-6 inch contoured edge for mulch retention.Loading sand

Types of Organic Mulches we offer:

  • Hardwood - composed of double shredded wood, available in 4 colors (red, super red, black and brown), a superior mulch that is dyed to retain its color longer
  • Shredded pine - we use a premium mulch that is processed through a mill, treated so it's bug free, and has a great smell; however, the color fades quickly
  • Pine bark - comes in nugget form, does not compact as easily as other types of mulches, good for retaining acidity in soil (great for pines and evergreens)
  • Cedar - has a great smell, red color that complements any landscape
  • Cypress - not dyed, retains color longer
  • Soil products - examples are compost, peat moss - these products are used in potting, around delicate plants like roses, but are vulnerable to erosion
