What are Koi?

Nishikigoi have been called the national fish of Japan. Hundreds of years ago, farmers in the village of Yamakoshi, in the mountains of Niigata, raised this type of carp to supplement their diet of rice and vegetables.

Through the years and through selective breeding, Japanese breeders have created the over 100 named varieties of Nishikigoi..

Types of Koi:

  • Kohaku- White with red markings
  • Sanke- Black with red and white markings
  • Showa- White markings with a black base
  • Tancho- Kohaku, Sanke, and Showa with a red marking on the head and no hi (color) on the body
  • Hikarimujil- Singular uniform color
  • Utsurimono- Black with white, red, or yellow markings

Winter is a great time to deisgn and build water gardens!

Ponds are built in stages. Layers of rings are dug out of the soil so that we can stack rocks to form the bed, and to give the pond a more natural environment - good for fish and aquatic plants.

Water Garden in ProgressThe photo is a water garden in progress. Periodically, we will update the photo so you can watch a water garden as it's being built. This pond is approximately 20" x 20" and will have a 3-4 foot horseshoe shaped waterfall.

In the next stage, sand is placed into the shelves of soil within each ring. Doing this ensures we obtain a smooth base that will protect the liner. Using sand at this point allows us to level the pond, and to estimate where the water level will be when the pond is complete.

A water feature is similar to a bowl of water in your yard. We want the water to be level, no matter how much the bowl is tilted. Using a string, to which a small level is attached, we check all points around the pond, paying close attention to the top shelf, the most important. Taking care at the stage means your pond will look natural, and not manufactured.

The next step is installing poly-fabric that serves as extra protection against sharp objects. Installing the fabric also makes it easier to measure for the liner.

Installation of the liner is next, and this is a 2-3 person job because the liner is very heavy. Even though the liner is thick, punctures and rips can and do happen accidentally if extreme care isn't taken at this stage.

Installing the liner in a water gardenThe liner is tucked into place, starting and the bottom. Rocks are strategically set around the shelves to anchor the liner. Pump, wiring, and tubing is placed in the bottom, and concealed with rocks because remember, we want our pond to look completely natural.

On this water feature, we used 4400lbs or 2 tons of stone, and we will need another ton to complete the jobPlacing stones in a water garden.

We slowly, over a couple of hours, fill the pond with water as we complete rock placement. Water level is adjusted, by simply adding soil or stones.

At this stage, the water looks muddy, but that's normal. It takes time for the sediments from the soil and rock to settle, and when we turn the bio-filter on, the water will soon be clear and beautiful.

Water garden with rock

Because the bio-filter pump we've chosen to use must stay dry, it will be necessary to cleverly hide the unit from veiw. We do this with rock and plants. At the point, there are two things to remember - don't let the filter get wet, and make sure your outake flush line is facing away from the water so you can flush the system out as needed.
